Thrie Heids

"Wonderful! Marvelous! This has been an experience of a lifetime for our pupils. The interaction, the focus and level of attainment has been "gob smacking."

Moira Thorburn, Principal Teacher of Music, Braidburn Special School

Premiered at The Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow as part of the international music education showcase Music and the New Musicians, Thrie Heids is a 20 minute work for large 10 piece amplified ensemble and chorus of laptops. The first performance was given in November 2006 by five young disabled adults from Braidburn Special School in Edinburgh alongside the maverick ensemble Music at the Brewhouse.

This project focused on the creation of bespoke digital instruments for each of the five young performers, customized to complement their physical abilities. The resulting score is an electrifying, genre-crossing score which produced ground breaking innovations in sound design and digital music processing by Edinburgh based sound designer Martin Parker. Exploring issues of access and accessibility to live music performance through innovations in technology, Thrie Heids was developed in partnership with Drake Music Scotland, and was a winning work at the British Academy of Composers Awards in 2007.
